The Camera Adds £250,000

Ever heard the saying, "The camera adds ten pounds?” Well, in our world, it should add a whopping £250,000 – in impact, not weight. Let's rewind to the GUAPGALA 2023, an event that I’m proud to say has redefined 'epic' in the UK fashion universe.

Picture this: the Natural History Museum, transformed into a cosmic runway, where fashion met the stars, quite literally. The GUAPGALA 2023 wasn't just a gala; it was a supernova of creativity and style, celebrating Black art and culture in the most magnificent way possible.

Now, ITV's Fresh Cuts documentary "Black in Fashion" decided to capture this magic, focusing on GUAP, the UK's first Black Fashion Gala. In only our second year delivering this show it was a huge honour knowing that a documentary crew would be zooming in on our efforts to stage what we’ve often referred to as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the GUAP business model.

The event itself was a kaleidoscope of jaw-dropping styles and otherworldly outfits. We're talking about a red carpet that could rival any show, immersive photo and video experiences for guests to fully savour the 'Cosmic Dawn', and a reception in Earth Hall where everyone seemed to descend from a different planet of cool. This night was not just about fashion; it was about making a statement, loud and clear.

The awards ceremony.  Nothing short of magical. Hosted by the ever-brilliant Munya Chawawa and Remi Burgz, Hintze Hall became our universe for the night, with the iconic whale skeleton overhead.  From the electrifying performances by artists like Sekou, Unknown T and Tay Iwar to the prestigious Legacy Award presented to Idris Elba, every moment was a testament to the phenomenal talent and contribution of the established and emerging Black British creative artists.

But here's the kicker: the camera. It added more than just a visual record of the night. It added value, recognition, and an undeniable weight to the work we do. It was proof that when passion meets platform, magic happens. Now, as the lights dimmed and the last echoes of The Compozers' beats faded, we stood there, feeling pride and awe at what what we’d achieved.

The GUAPGALA 2023 was not just a job well done; it was a milestone in our journey, a loud declaration that we're here, we're bold, and we're just getting started.  And don’t take our word for it, the BBC said it was “reminiscent of Vogue editor Anna Wintour's famous Met Gala” joining The Independent with “London’s rival to the Met Gala” - brands needing to join this runaway train should be planning their 2024 headline budget now.  Contact us if you want to know more.

So, as I reflect on the camera's £250,000 addition, I know it’s as much about the value we bring to the table – every idea, every meeting, every execution. It's about making every part of the project count, every moment a masterpiece.

To the aspiring event magicians out there, remember: if you are going to be in a documentary, get a tan and a fresh haircut.  Thank me later.
